Douglas's Reflections of The Cyanotype Process

I was intrigued by this alternative photographic process and the fact the chemical process that we are using is environmentally friendly. The introduction to the process creating contact prints as seen in “Doilies of a feather” and “Heirloom Roses” allowed us to experiment with physical objects directly placed onto the prepared paper. My approach to the process was to create a structured composition using a variety of media. This allowed us to experience mixing the chemicals for application to the paper and adjusting the exposure times to achieve the desired results. A bit of experimentation with a new process.

What was more exciting for me was gaining the experience and knowledge to create digital negatives and generate prints using the Cyanotype Process. It helped that the course provided a large database of artists who have worked with the medium/process to allow our minds to think of new ways or adapt existing applications of the process to our own work. It was greatly appreciated the preparation our instructor put into creating a work space to allow for this experimental creative process. This included a dedicated lab space, the creation of a 24” x 24” UV Light Box for controlled exposures, all chemical and developing agents on hand, ensuring a supply of both negative film roll and Arches Platine and Canson Water Colour paper to be in stock, etc. I also found it interesting learning from the experimental process our instructor went through to create a custom curve for the specific materials we were working with to create the best possible images. I would be interested in experimenting with the variety of toning solutions to achieve different results as well as continuing the series of car sections as I found this subject matter worked well for this medium.
